Two buildings, including the Capitol Cinema dating back to the 1920’s, were transformed into a 5-stars luxury property under the Kempinski flag, originally developed with Patina Hotels and Resorts. The heritage building was under strict supervision of the Urban Redevelopment Authority in Singapore (URA) which brought along many challenges, including the task to develop 151 different guestroom floor plans out of 155 keys. Jaya International Design was responsible for the space planning within the existing structures to resonate with the existing architecture. The result was a contemporary interpretation of Art Deco with a hint of Singaporean culture. Van Ooyen oversaw the design team during the entire process while coordinated every step of the way with all other consultants and the owner/operator teams.
